2017 Nissan Pathfinder Review

Sales of SUVs are white hot so Nissan isn’t going to rest on its laurels when it comes to refreshing the 2017 Pathfinder. As a matter of fact, Nissan calls it a major redesign of the 4th generation model which was introduced in 2013 – moving away from its rugged sport-ute ways to a more family friendly crossover. It starts with an updated appearance including the new “V-Motion” grille with LED headlights now standard on Platinum grade. Additionally, aerodynamic optimization efforts have reduced the Pathfinder’s coefficient of drag without compromising the approach angle for off-road driving. Another significant addition for 2017 is the available Motion-Activated liftgate. A simple wave of the foot under the center of the liftgate activates the power opening function. Mechanically speaking, its revised 3.5-liter V6 now produces more power with horsepower increased from 260 to 284 and torque from 240 pound-feet to 259. This along with body reinforcements added around the trailer hitch area means the new Pathfinder flaunts a standard 6,000-pound towing rating, an increase of 1,000 pounds. As in previous years, the Pathfinder features selectable 2WD, Auto or 4WD Lock modes for the available 4-wheel drive system. The extensively retuned 4-wheel independent suspension also contributes to the enhanced driving dynamics, offering improved body control and a more refined ride. And the steering is now 11% quicker for enhanced maneuverability. All models are equipped with Nissan’s 3rd gen Xtronic transmission – a CVT type that simulates shifts, giving it a more natural acceleration feeling. Despite the bump in power, gas mileage remains rated at 20mpg city/27mpg highway for 2-wheel drive Pathfinders. Newly designed cupholders, an additional USB port, the adoption of a new Advanced Drive-Assist Display in the center of the gauge cluster and expanded NissanConnect services through the next-gen infotainment system highlight the interior upgrades. The 2017 Pathfinder's advanced driver assistance technology includes new Forward Emergency Braking and Intelligent Cruise Control. This 3-row 7-passenger Pathfinder is offered in 4 grade levels: S, SV, SL and Platinum.
