2019 Jeep Cherokee Review
Some mid-cycle refreshes are minor and barely noticeable. This isn’t one of them. The 2019 Cherokee isn’t scheduled for a complete redesign for several more years but Jeep is putting extra effort into keeping the current model contemporary. New styling, an all-new powerhouse engine option, a more efficient 4-wheel drive system, improved cargo volume…this is above and beyond the typical revised grille and new wheel designs. Jeep takes the Cherokee’s look in a more premium direction including LED exterior lighting, but don’t worry; it’s still a rugged SUV with Trail-Rated capabilities depending upon the configuration, led by the off-road specific Trailhawk model. This one wears its own unique appearance fostering an improved approach angle. There’s also an anti-glare hood decal, skid plates, higher ride height, off-road tires and red tow hooks. The interior has taken on a fresh, elegant touch as well with the use of more premium materials and a resculpted center console creating more usable space for smart phone connections. Rear cargo capacity has also been increased over three inches in width and now totals more than 27 cubic feet, offering additional storage space that can easily accommodate golf clubs. The 2.4-liter Tigershark engine is standard on the entry level models while the Pentastar V6 fills in the top end trims but the big news for 2019 surrounds the new 2.0-liter turbo, producing 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It’s a $500 option on all but the base Latitude model and will appeal to performance enthusiasts. A 9-speed automatic remains the sole transmission across the board. Jeep Active Drive I is a new design for the most rudimentary 4-wheel drive system offered; lighter and simple to use, it’s available on all but Trackhawk models. Active Drive II ups the ante with a low range for off-road crawling and comes with an available locking rear differential - standard on Trackhawk and optional on Latitude Plus and Limited trims. Pricing for a front-drive Cherokee Latitude starts at about $25,000 while a loaded Overland runs into the low 40s.
